The flag of the United States territory of Guam was adopted on February 9, 1948. The territorial flag is dark blue with a narrow red border on all four sides; centered is a red-bordered almond shaped emblem, containing a beach scene which depicts a proa or outrigger canoe with sail, a palm tree with the word GUAM superimposed in bold red letters; the proa is sailing in Agana Bay near the capital Hagåtña in the background, with the promontory of Punta Dos Amantes; blue represents the sea and red the blood shed in the struggle against oppression. The shape of the emblem recalls the slingshot stones used by the islanders' ancestors. note: the US flag is the national flag.
