Cat Island is some 50 miles long but only 4 miles wide. It lies between Eleuthera to the northwest and Long Island to the south. The eastern shore faces the open Atlantic, protected by a barrier reef offshore and miles of pristine beaches. There are also beaches on the western side of the island in a more protected, peaceful environment. Small family resorts like the Fernandez Bay Club are favorites to seasoned travelers in the Bahamas and the island abounds with interesting features. The highest point in the country is Mount Alvernia, 206 feet above sea level and home to The Hermitage, designed and built by priest, architect, and hermit “Father Jerome”.

The south end of Cat Island features world class wahoo and sport fishing based out of Hawks Nest Resort. There are numerous caves and blue holes along the length of the island, mixed with endless beaches where one can always find solitude. The north end of the island was the childhood home of Academy Award winner Sidney Poitier and off the northwest coast is the island of Little San Salvador, home to Holland America’s Half Moon Cay.
