Sailing Cuba?

Bluewater Books and Charts is delighted to announce that the official Cuban Hydrographic Office charts are now available. Approximately 170 standard navigation charts can be ordered from Bluewater and supplied with lead time of 14 days. These charts are supplied by GeoCuba in Havana and are corrected to their latest monthly notice to Mariners.

In addition to these individual charts there now 8 Yachting Charts (chart books) covering Cuban waters published and updated frequently by GeoCuba. 8 of these chart books cover all of the coastline of Cuba by geographic areas.

Below is our list of 12 Reasons why you need to set sail for Cuba.

Travel restrictions can change without notice. For the most up to date information always check with the U.S.Embassy in Cuba.

  1. Because You Can: Cuba is still open for business to Americans. Upon arrival in a Cuban Port you will register with the port authorities and complete immigration. Boaters in personal vessels still need to apply for a Coast Guard "permit to enter Cuban territorial seas" using a Form 3300. Although this sounds daunting, actually it’s quite a laid back affair and rather simple.

  2. Bluewater Works with GeoCuba for You: In addition to the numerous cruising guides Bluewater carries, we also stock charts and chart books directly from the Cuban Hydrographic Office. The scale and detail of the cartography is unmatched and we can't recommend them enough.

  3. National Parks: The beaches and architecture aren’t the only part of Cuba’s landscape worth exploring. The country also has many national parks such as the Jardines de la Reina (“The Queen’s Garden”) archipelago in the south was named by Christopher Columbus and has some of the healthiest coral in the Caribbean, as it has remained practically untouched for 60 years.

  4. Beaches: Cuba is known for miles upon miles of white sandy beaches such as the famous Varadero Beach on the Hicacos Peninsula, which is home to numerous all-inclusive resorts. The palm trees, pineapple drinks and crystal blue water will leave you breathless.

  5. Scuba Diving: Scuba diving in Cuba is one of the best things to do on the water. Certified or not you can explore some of the best and clearest waters. One of the best places to dive in Cuba is at the Bay of Pigs.

  6. Cuban Cigars: The best cigars in the world can be yours. Organic tobacco farms offer tours and sell to Americans without issue and you can even bring them home.

  7. Classic Cars: Cuba is a time capsule more than architecture. Many are even classic American autos from the 1950s, like the Chevy Bel Air, Ford Fairlane, and Plymouth Belvedere. The vintage cars in Cuba are everywhere and available to be rented.

  8. Cuban Rum: Due to embargo, Cuba's style of Caribbean rum has not made it to the states. It's delicious and you shouldn't leave Cuba without tasting the forbidden fruit.

  9. Cuban Food: As seafarer's we all know the importance of trying the local food of a different culture. Between low cost street food, trendy tapas and cervezas places, and locally run paladars you won’t go hungry. If you are looking to travel Cuba on a budget you definitely can.

  10. History: There’s a lot more to Cuba’s past than rocky relations with the United States. In fact, Cuba has several sites that are recognized by the United Nations as being culturally significant. The locations include Camagüey, Old Havana and its fortifications, San Pedro de la Roca Castle, and more!

  11. It's a Short Trip from Florida: Most boaters head straight to Hemingway Marina, just west of Havana, where there are about 150 usable slips.

  12. You can Still Bring Home Souvenirs: U.S. travelers to Cuba are allowed to bring back $400 worth of goods and merchandise, of which no more than $100 can consist of both alcohol and tobacco products.

The evolution of Cuban architecture, influenced by climate and social conditions, parallels the cultural, political, and economic history of the island, and the houses and their decoration reflect periods of greater or lesser prosperity, as well as social inequalities.
