Nigel Calder on Navigation Back by popular demand, Nigel Calder will be at Bluewater Books & Charts on Wednesday, October 11, at 5:30 PM, for a seminar and book signing. His last event at Bluewater drew a crowd of enthusiastic boaters, and the information he gave in his seminar was valuable to all. "Today's WAAS-corrected GPS technology routinely provides navigators with real-time positional accuracy that has an error of less than 10 meters, and often less than 2 meters," Calder says. "Electronic navigation enables such fixes to be precisely plotted. Unfortunately, there is not a chart sold today, paper or electronic, that supports such a level of accuracy." In this seminar, he will address this issue and discuss how boaters can navigate safely using the current technology. Calder has written many books on mechanics, maintenance, cruising and navigation, including The Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual, Marine Diesel Engines, Refrigeration for Pleasureboats, Nigel Calder's Cruising Handbook, Cuba: A Cruising Guide, and How to Read a Nautical Chart. The event will be accompanied by a wine and cheese reception, and the author will be happy to answer questions and sign books after the event. When:

And… At
the Mercy of the Sea Come to Bluewater Books & Charts on Wednesday, Oct 18, at 5:50 PM for a special reading and discussion by author John Kretschmer of his forthcoming book At the Mercy of the Sea. Captain and writer John Kretschmer has logged over 227,000 miles on dozens of different boats, and is probably one of the most experienced passage making captains in the world. He is a longtime contributing editor to Sailing magazine, a sailing/travel columnist for the Miami Herald, and writes regularly for Southern Boating and Cruising World. He has weathered several storms at sea and teaches seminars, lectures, and training voyages. John is the author of The Used Boat Notebook, Flirting with Mermaids, and the forthcoming At the Mercy of the Sea. At the Mercy of the Sea is about three different sailboats and three different sailors that came together in the Anegada Passage during Hurricane Lenny, a Category 5 storm that swept through the Caribbean in November of 1999 with winds over 155 miles per hour. In Lenny's path were La Vie en Rose, a 41-foot sloop captained by ex-army lieutenant colonel Carl Wake, who was also a friend of the author's; English Braids, a tiny 21-foot racer skippered by would-be elite competitive sailor Steve Rigby; and Frederic-Anne, a 65-foot schooner rigged for day-sail charters out of St. Martin and skippered by ambitious young Guillaume Llobregat. Wine and cheese will be served, and the author will be happy to sign books and answer questions after the reading. When:
