Earlier this week, I attended a Broward County Commission Public Hearing, during which a very important step was made towards providing more boat slips in Broward County. The Boat Facility Siting Plan, which is something that has been in the works for over two years, is a revised plan that will allow 6,972 new boat slips, dry storage units and boat ramp parking spaces for Broward County's vessels. The plan also takes environmental issues into consideration, redefining Port Everglades as its own zone for manatee protection and providing for more law enforcement to focus on manatee protection.

The County Commission voted to transmit the plan to the state for review, putting the plan under the scrutiny of both State and Federal Fish and Wildlife Services. While opponents of the plan don't believe that it will be approved, the County and the Marine Industry hope that they will be able to work to revise it after receiving the State's comments and suggestions, and that it will, in one form or another, be passed eventually. Along with other members of South Florida's Marine Industry, I feel that new slips are necessary if we want to continue to enjoy the water and make it accessible to all.

We started the Boat Show Season with a splash up in Newport. The Crew at Armchair Sailor received some help from Fort Lauderdale for the Newport International Boat Show, held September 14-17. Justin Mann and Melanie Neale traveled from Fort Lauderdale to Newport, where they spent time both in the store and at the show. You can read Melanie's article in this newsletter to find out about some exciting new boats and products that were introduced in Newport. Some new twists on popular navigation software from Nobeltec and a boat that was designed to fit into a cargo crate are two of the items she discovered.

October is going to be an incredible month at Bluewater. If you're in Fort Lauderdale, check out all of the events we have coming up. Nigel Calder will speak at the store on October 11, John Kretschmer on October 18, and then we'll be at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show on October 26-30. Our booth number is 1602, which, if you're familiar with Bahia Mar, is located on the south side of the marina facing the famous Charter Boat Row. We will have extended store hours during the show, so give us a call to find out more!

November 1, the Wednesday after the show, we will hold our third annual E-Nav Update in our store. This event is an open house for captains, crew and boat owners. Representatives from all of the major electronic navigation companies will be on-hand to answer questions about their products, giving you the personal attention you may not have gotten at the boat show.

We're going into our second year of partnership with South Broward High School's Marine Magnet Program, and are hosting intern Cody Escobar. Cody, a senior at South Broward, has been learning about the process of ordering and maintaining our inventory of British Admiralty Charts.

We will be publishing a special gift catalog in time for Christmas this year, so be sure to call us and request a copy if you are interested!

South Florida has been beautiful for the past few weeks, reminding us why we decided to move here. After a month of rain, it feels like Fall is finally here and it's time to get out on the water. See Dave Kresge's article in this newsletter for information on a great new website designed to be a resource for South Florida boaters, and remember to check back issues of the Bluewater Newsletter for for great tips on cruising Florida and heading south down the ICW.

Enjoy!
