Instrument Expo
Draws a Crowd "He's been talking about wanting a sextant for a long time," said one of the attendees at Bluewater's first-ever Instrument Expo as her husband practiced taking imaginary sun sights on an Astra III sextant. Russell Kirby, a member of Bluewater's Chart Department, explained how it worked as a small crowd clustered around the sextant table and leaned in to listen. Elsewhere in the store, Ed Kurcharski (below) from Weems & Plath showed a group of onlookers, including boating authors Tom and Mel Neale (All in the Same Boat, BoatUS, Soundings and PassageMaker), how to use the new Light Rule. Outside, John Miklovis from ComMar, distributors for Steiner, stood by as several customers passed a pair of binoculars back and forth. |

The philosophy behind the event was to give customers something similar to a boat show between two bigger boat shows—the Palm Beach Show and the Dania Marine Flea Market. Also, we wanted to give our customers the opportunity to learn about a few of the interesting navigational tools that we carry and to have the chance to speak one-on-one with sales reps and experts about tools that they may want to purchase at some point. Sextants and binoculars are a big investment for most people, so we believe that it's good to be armed with information before you buy. The highlight of the event was having three well-known authors in the store at one time. Novelist Christine Kling showed up for the second half of the event. She recently bought a sailboat, which she is in the process of outfitting. Her favorite items on display were the Weems & Plath elegant chart weights. She has written three mystery novels about Seychelle Sullivan, a tugboat captain on Fort Lauderdale's New River, and she's one of our favorite authors.
If you missed out on this event, send me an email at mneale@bluewaterweb.com and I'll add you to my event notification list. You can also check the events page on our website for updates. The next big one will be on June 3, and you don't want to miss it. It's scheduled to run all day, and will feature seminars how how to deal with hurricane season. Trust me on this: you need to be here for it!
