Newport to Bermuda, Safely
by

Preparations are underway for the Centennial Newport to Bermuda Race this summer. The race doesn't start until June 16, but you can rest assured that there are many events to look forward to between now and then.

The race is hosted by Cruising Club of America (CCA) and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC), and the first event leading up to the race will be a Safety at Sea Seminar at the Hyatt Goat Island, Newport, RI, on March 11 and 12.

Speakers on Saturday, March 11, will include seamanship and history author John Rousmaniere, and the captain of the legendary super-maxi Mari-Cha IV, Jef d'Etiveaud. The event goes on all day, and offers participants the opportunity to talk one-on-one with the panelists and vendors. Saturday’s curriculum is a sanctioned US Sailing Safety at Sea Seminar.

Armchair Sailor, Bluewater's sister store, will be at the Hyatt, exhibiting all of the latest electronic charts and software as well as all of the plotting charts, paper charts and piloting guides, Gulf Stream and weather books needed for the race. If you are participating in the race, call Ted Shanstrom at (401) 847-4252 for recommendations.

Sunday’s session is highly recommended but not required for US Sailing certification. It features an expanded Medical Seminar narrated by CCA Fleet Surgeon, Edwin G. Fischer, MD and a Race Preparation Session hosted by the Race Organizing Committee. Speakers will include BROC Technical Committee Chairman Bill Langan, Practical Sailor Editor at Large Nick Nicholson, and the Exec VP of North Marine Group, Jay Hansen.
